This project involved the sensitive conversion and extension of a disused stone barn located within a traditional farm complex in the picturesque village of Bryneglwys. The barn, dating back to the late 19th century, retained much of its original stone fabric and layout, offering significant local historical and architectural interest. The design approach focused on preserving the barn's character while adapting it for modern residential use.
The family, with deep ties to the Bryneglwys community, sought to create a functional and inviting home. The layout of the dwelling was carefully planned to balance the barn’s original structure with the needs of modern living. On the ground floor, the conversion features a spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area, complemented by a snug lounge that retains the barn’s authentic stone walls and exposed timber beams. The design also incorporates practical spaces, such as a utility room and storage areas, ensuring functionality is prioritised without compromising character.
The first floor accommodates three well-proportioned bedrooms and a family bathroom, all arranged to optimise the barn’s original proportions while providing comfort and convenience. The thoughtful distribution of spaces respects the building’s historic layout while meeting contemporary family needs.
Materials were chosen to harmonise with the original barn, ensuring the extension felt like a natural continuation of the structure. The external finishes feature reclaimed stone and timber cladding, while the roof utilises traditional slate to match the existing aesthetic. Internally, the design blends rustic elements with contemporary features, creating a warm and functional living environment. Modern double-glazed windows and doors were installed to maximise natural light while preserving the building’s character.
Access to the dwelling utilised the existing farmyard entry, which provided ample turning and parking spaces. Level access was achieved through a ramped approach at the main entrance, ensuring the home’s accessibility for all users. The design introduced subtle landscaping around the property to frame the barn and its extension, enhancing its setting within the farm complex.
The planning process involved close collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust (CPAT), Natural Resources Wales (NRW), and the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Joint Committee. These consultations ensured the conversion aligned with local residential needs while preserving the barn’s historical and environmental significance. Specific conditions, such as completing a detailed photographic survey and implementing external lighting restrictions, were met to safeguard the building’s heritage and maintain the integrity of its surroundings.
The resulting dwelling strikes a balance between preserving the agricultural heritage of the barn and providing a functional family home. The thoughtful layout and use of materials ensure the conversion respects the past while offering a comfortable and inviting space for modern living.
